History

This Greek Revival home's construction was completed in 1953 and built for the then, Caldwell County Judge -- Bill Gambrell and his wife Josie. It was only one of two homes ever built by the builder Page-Southerland and Page, commercial builders from Austin.

The home sits on eight-tenths of an acre and features a multitude of trees including producing Pecans and native Live Oaks. It is a three bedroom, three and one half bath with wood floors and many of the original lighting fixtures and chandeliers. The home was lovingly restored by the Herpels, restoration efforts kept the home with the 1950s interior architecture.

Original elements exist in the home's kitchen. The original cabinets reached the ceiling, and in their remodeling, they had them fir downed, and indirect lighting was placed behind the crown molding. Flat paneled cabinet doors were replaced with glass mullion windows.

The upstairs guest bathroom still parallels 1950s style with original tile. The electric wall heater was restored and rechromed. The original Crain sink features a revolving toothbrush holder which was also rechromed. The blinds in the home are also original. They were found in the attic of the home and were carefully re-webbed, restored and rehung. The original label of the blind maker in Austin sits beside the label of the restorer.

We purchased the home in September 2016, and also did extensive restorations. The home reflects some personal elements of our interests. Julie spent time as an exchange student as well as on an expatriate assignment in Central America. One of the living areas is decorated with items from her travels. Items from local estates have also been acquired and placed in the home.
